Description

A breezy summer day finds a curious narrator receiving a thick manuscript that recalls the golden age of sea‑travel. Set in a bustling Finnish port, the story opens with the majestic steamship Delfine, a teak‑clad marvel once launched on Scotland’s Clyde River. Its sleek hull, likened to a young woman, has already carried countless cargos, and its presence on the Porvoo shoreline draws the admiration of locals and aspiring sailors alike.

The narrator soon meets the ship’s charismatic captain, Oskar Bäck, whose invitation to “ride the mist” sparks an impulsive desire for adventure. Joined by a lanky deckhand named Löflund and a small crew of Finnish boys, they set off for Helsinki before heading toward the Norwegian town of Kristiansand. Along the way the vessel takes on a handful of new hands—including a young captain’s wife and her daughter—hinting at the mix of camaraderie and mystery that will color the voyage. The early chapters blend nostalgic seafaring lore with the restless spirit of youth, inviting listeners to experience the salty air and whispered legends of a bygone era.
