A restless adventurer arrives in the bustling port of Callao, drawn by tales of Peru’s legendary gold that can unlock any door. Instead of mining, he is directed to the high‑altitude construction site of the de los Andes railway, a precarious line winding through cliffs, ravines and swaying bridges. The landscape is stark and unforgiving, with steep grades that keep the train’s brakes on the edge of failure at every turn.
Among the ragged camp of “vetäjäs” he forms fast friendships with a German laborer, a Scottish foreman and a towering Canadian, all sharing makeshift tents and scarce rations under a star‑filled sky. When an enormous gorge blocks progress, the chief engineer offers a modest reward for anyone brave enough to test its walls, prompting a daring (and dangerous) attempt that reveals both the sheer physical challenges and the fragile bonds of trust among the men. The first act sets a vivid stage of ambition, hardship, and camaraderie in the Andes.

A Finnish sea captain who turned real maritime experience into fiction, he published just two books—but they carry the pull of distant voyages and adventure. Writing under the pen name Erkki West, he brought a sailor’s eye to stories shaped by travel and life at sea.
