Description

A sumptuous royal tour unfurls across Picardy and Flanders, where Louis XIV drags his glittering court through fortified ports, bustling harbors and the freshly repaired walls of Boulogne. The king fashions the journey as a grand spectacle, staging mock naval battles that turn the sea into a stage for pageantry and political showmanship. Meanwhile, the marquise watches the procession from the sidelines, keenly aware that her invitation has been withdrawn and that her only remaining bond to the monarch is the children they share.

The staged engagements aboard a gleaming man‑of‑war captivate everyone, from the king himself—who cheers each cannonade as though a beloved courtier were performing—to the ladies who applaud until their hands ache. Diplomatic emissaries from England and Spain board the vessel, receiving honors atop an elaborate throne, while the court flits from Dunkirk to Lille, Valenciennes and back to Versailles in a blur of feasts, fanfares and fleeting alliances. Through it all, the marquise records her reflections on the fleeting delights of power and the quiet ache of being sidelined in a world obsessed with pomp.
