About the author

Born Françoise-Athénaïs de Rochechouart de Mortemart, Madame de Montespan was a French noblewoman best known as the celebrated mistress of Louis XIV. Sources agree that she was born in October 1640 or 1641 and died in 1707; she married the marquis de Montespan in 1663 and later became a central presence at court.

During the late 1660s and 1670s, she was one of the most influential figures at Versailles. Contemporary accounts and later histories describe her as witty, stylish, and socially brilliant, with a strong ability to command attention in the highly competitive world around the king. She also became associated with the Château de Clagny, built near Versailles for her.

Her later years were marked by a retreat from court life after her long relationship with Louis XIV faded. Even now, Madame de Montespan remains a vivid character in books about the Sun King’s court because her story brings together glamour, ambition, scandal, and the intense politics of royal favor.
