Transcriber’s Note
At the heart of a Swedish countryside manor, a lively brood of children lives under the watchful eye of their mother, Selma, and the looming presence of Back‑Kaisa, the towering nursemaid. Back‑Kaisa, born in the remote woods, is sturdy and dutiful but lacks the gentleness a nursery seems to need. Her rough hands and stern demeanor clash with the children’s laughter, who instead find comfort in their grandmother’s morning songs and their father’s playful visits. The contrast between the harsh caretaker and the warm family rituals paints a vivid domestic scene on the estate.
The nursery, a bright, airy gable‑room tucked behind a steep attic staircase, becomes a stage for routines. While Back‑Kaisa scrubs, combs, and tends the children with an unyielding grip, the kids must navigate the narrow stairs and folding beds that dominate the space. Their grandmother’s stories and songs try to soften the rigidity, hinting at a world beyond Mårbacka’s walls. As the family prepares for a gathering, the uneasy balance between discipline and affection begins to surface, promising subtle shifts in the household’s rhythm.
