Description

In the winding streets of early‑twentieth‑century St. Giles, the Maiden Head Inn hums with the clatter of mugs and the low murmur of conspiratorial gossip. A group of boisterous men—among them the philosophical John Gay and the blustering Lord Bolingbroke—debate legends of highwaymen while awaiting the arrival of a new talent. Their restless chatter is cut short when a small, striking girl steps into the doorway, her eyes bright and her mouth already forming a smile.

The girl, known in the tavern as Madame Flirt, lifts her voice in a lilting rendition of the old ballad “Cold and Raw,” and the room falls silent, drawn by a timbre that seems to soften even the hardest of hearts. Her effortless charm sets off a chain of flirtations, jealous whispers, and promises that hint at deeper entanglements with the handsome but reckless Lance Vane. Listeners are invited to follow her through smoky coffee houses and moonlit ponds, where music, wit, and budding affection mingle in a lively portrait of love on the London fringe.
