The play revives the timeless legend of the Lovers of Terode—Juan Diego Martínez Garcés de Marsilla and Isabel de Segura—set against the fortified walls of 13th‑century Teruel. Hartzenbusch blends verse and prose to capture the earnest, almost naïve devotion of two childhood sweethearts whose bond is tested by social ambition and the harsh demands of a feudal world. The romance unfolds in a city still echoing the recent Reconquista, offering listeners a vivid backdrop of medieval Aragonese life.
In the first act the lovers confront a familiar obstacle: Isabel’s father refuses the match because Marsilla lacks wealth, while a richer suitor, Rodrigo de Azagra, courts her instead. The father’s conditional blessing—that Marsilla go to war, earn fame and fortune, and return within a set time—sets the stage for a tense, hopeful waiting period. As the drama moves forward, the audience feels the mixture of youthful optimism and the looming pressure of time, making the story both intimate and historically resonant.
