Description

On a still, hot autumn afternoon a weather‑worn farmer watches the prairie stretch beyond his open window, the drone of mosquitoes a constant backdrop. He begins to record his life on the Fairmead homestead, a modest slice of land between the Saskatchewan and the Souris rivers. The house, filled with old guns, painted insects, and a mounted horse’s leg, holds the tokens of the many challenges he and his wife Grace have faced since moving west. The description of the silvery horizon, rolling wheat fields, and hidden colors of the grassland sets a vivid stage for their pioneering story.

Yet the season brings relentless work: planting, harvesting, and the ever‑present threat of drought or flood. As the first crops near their peak, the family balances hard labor with quiet moments, like Grace’s sewing and the farmer’s reflections on the land that has become home. Brief encounters with railroad workers and fellow settlers hint at a wider community that will shape their future. Listeners are invited to share in their determination as they confront the raw forces of the prairie.
