Loot of the Void
By Edwin K. Sloat
In the glittering corridors of a Martian starliner, a seasoned gambler named Dick Penrun finds his ordinary night turned upside‑down when an elderly, white‑haired Martian claims to have served under the infamous space‑pirate Halkon. The old man insists he holds the key to the legendary pirate’s hidden treasure—a secret that could rewrite Penrun’s own family history, since he is the long‑concealed grandson of the feared corsair. Their uneasy conversation is interrupted by a sudden, violent attack that leaves the stranger dead and a mysterious, yellowed note within reach.
Grabbing the paper just as a shadowy assassin opens fire, Penrun is thrust into a frantic chase through the ship’s electric-lit promenade. He darts past bulkhead doors, discovers a missing space‑suit, and watches the killer vanish into the void. With only cryptic clues and a dangerous pursuit ahead, Penrun must decide whether to follow the trail of the loot—or become its next victim.
