The Space Rover - By Edwin K. Sloat
Winford, a former Earth miner, pilots a cramped, jury‑rigged sphere that once ferried convicts to Mercury’s brutal mine colonies. With him are five other prisoners—Martians, Venusians, and a reluctant Martian‑like creature—each scarred by the Council’s harsh sentences. Their desperate breakout has thrust them into the Sun’s glare, far from any known traffic lanes, and the ship’s dwindling fuel leaves little margin for error.
The group wrestles with fear and suspicion as they argue whether to turn back toward the deadly mines or press onward into the void. Winford clings to a risky plan: use the shifting orbital paths of interplanetary liners to hitch a ride back to safety. As the tiny craft drifts, hope flickers whenever a distant glow appears, but the real test will be surviving long enough for rescue.
