Description

In a cold, starless night a frail old peasant lies dying alone in a ramshackle farmhouse, his family gathered around a smoky hearth more interested in gossip and games than his fading breath. The cramped kitchen‑cellar smells of damp earth, stale smoke and stale beans, while the children scavenge for crickets and barter with plum‑stones, their youthful cruelty echoing the neglect of the elder. The scene is rendered with brutal honesty, painting a vivid portrait of rural hardship, silent resignation, and the thin line between life’s last gasp and the everyday grind.

When a knock finally pierces the gloom, a stranger with a foreign accent steps inside, claiming to be the new steward. His sudden appearance unsettles the household, stirring a mixture of suspicion and curiosity among the family members. As the old man’s final moments draw near, the arrival of this unknown figure promises to disturb the fragile equilibrium of a world already teetering on the edge of change.
