Description

A young boarder sets down her thoughts at the start of the summer break, eager to trade the quiet cloisters of her convent for the open road. She watches the locomotive roar past the familiar towers of Angers, the countryside unfurling into a ribbon of villages, vineyards, and the shimmering banks of the Loire. The diary captures her delight in the clatter of the omnibus, the rustle of leaves, and the promise of freedom that each new landscape brings. As the train carries her toward Nantes, she notes the historic towns and their lingering legends, letting the scenery fuel her imagination.

Reaching the country house of her gracious hosts, she is struck by the contrast between the modest convent life and the opulent surroundings. The garden teems with sculpted paths, shady trees, and crystal‑clear streams that seem to whisper stories of distant lands. In this new setting she begins to record the subtle wonders and uneasy feelings that accompany her first taste of holiday liberty.
