HOW TO READ LATIN
EXCELSIOR [HIGHER]! 6
Designed as a stepping stone toward reading Caesar, this introductory Latin course blends thorough grammar instruction with engaging reading material. The first section eases learners into pronunciation, accent, and the basics of quantity, laying a solid foundation before moving on to vocabulary and simple constructions. With a carefully chosen list of about six hundred common words—most of them drawn straight from Caesar’s own prose—the lessons keep new terms manageable and memorable. Throughout, English equivalents are provided to reinforce connections and aid retention.
The middle portion guides students through seventy‑nine lessons, gradually expanding their grasp of forms, syntax, and the subtleties of the subjunctive while integrating short translations and readings from historical and mythological sources. A final suite of nineteen lessons focuses on more advanced syntax and verb patterns, culminating in a concise review and a narrative that follows a Roman boy’s experiences in Caesar’s army. This structure ensures steady progress, frequent practice, and a clear path toward confident Latin translation.
