Description

In a remote corner of northern Finnmark, the tiny village of Karasjok clings to a sweeping plain where the river of the same name carves its way through grass‑touched meadows and lichen‑covered hills. A modest wooden church stands at the heart of the settlement, surrounded by a handful of Sami families whose lives revolve around reindeer, fishing and the endless cycles of summer light and winter dark. Into this quiet world arrives a young Norwegian merchant, Lind, and his new wife, who have brought with them a four‑month‑old daughter and a small caravan of prized sled‑reindeer, each adorned with colourful harnesses and silver trimmings.

The family prepares for a journey to the neighboring parish of Koutokeino, where a priest will christen the infant. Their departure is marked by the careful packing of a traditional wooden “kätky,” a portable cradle designed to protect a child against the biting cold while being carried on a sled. As the snow begins to fall, the villagers watch the white‑haired reindeer pull the laden sled, hinting at the blend of hardship and hospitality that will shape the child’s early days in this stark yet beautiful landscape.
