Description

Set against the windswept lakes and hills of early 19th‑century Cumberland, the tale follows a bold, dark‑eyed young woman who trades her modest cottage life for the title of Countess Lovel. She marries the reclusive Earl Lovel, a man of great wealth but an even greater reputation for secrecy and cruelty, and moves into the bleak Lovel Grange, a house as somber as the marriage itself. From the outset her ambition clashes with the isolated world of the northern estate, hinting at the hardships that will test her spirit.

As she navigates the earl's cold indifference and the tangled legalities of a marriage without a settlement, she encounters a determined solicitor‑general, a local tailor, and new acquaintances who each add pressure and possibility. The narrative weaves questions of duty, inheritance, and the limited freedoms of women of her rank, while her resolve to forge a happier future begins to surface. Listeners will be drawn into her struggle for dignity amid the stark beauty and hidden perils of the English aristocracy.
