Description

Born into the waning world of the French monarchy, Madame Elisabeth grew up in the shadow of Versailles, surrounded by the splendor and strict expectations of royal life. Unlike many of her courtiers, she turned early to a quiet devotion, finding comfort in prayer and in the simple bonds of friendship that she cultivated with earnest sincerity. The biography paints a vivid portrait of a woman whose kindness and steady common sense set her apart, revealing a personality both humble and resolutely loyal to her family.

When the Revolution erupted, Elisabeth chose to stay close to her brother, King Louis XVI, refusing the safety of exile that some of her relatives sought. Her letters and actions show a steadfast courage, as she quietly tended to the needs of the royal household while confronting the mounting threat of the mobs. The narrative captures the tension of those turbulent months, illustrating how her deep faith and love for her kin guided her through a world that was rapidly slipping away.
