Description

A fog‑laden November morning finds the steamship Royal Sovereign cutting through the gray waves, its deck crowded with a motley troupe of travelers—pale officials, restless children, weary servants, and strangers bound for distant ports. The cramped cabins echo with coughs and quiet whispers, while the vessel itself seems both a palace and a coffin, rocking under the relentless pull of the sea. Amid this restless tableau, a young Spanish gentleman of about twenty‑four moves with a calm dignity, his dark curls and thoughtful eyes setting him apart from the hurried crowd.

He watches the scene with a quiet, precise eye, drawn especially to the distressed English family whose wife lies ill and whose small children are left trembling on deck. When a nervous German youth offers aid, fashioning a makeshift bed of pillows and a coat for the frail children, the Spanish observer feels a sudden, unexpected stir of compassion and curiosity. The first act of the story unfolds as these strangers navigate a storm of discomfort and subtle heroism, hinting at the tangled relationships that will develop aboard the ship.
