An English traveler sets out for Spain with a single purpose: to bring the Bible to a land where its words are still whispered in secret. His journey drifts through bustling markets, remote mountain villages, and the grand cathedrals of Toledo and Seville, where he meets bishops, merchants, and a curious gypsy abandoned on the road. Along the way he records the strange customs he observes, from the distinctive Basque dialects to the guarded verses of local poetry, all while a growing suspicion shadows his steps.
His missionary zeal soon collides with the wary Spanish clergy, whose hostility forces him into a series of narrow escapes and, unexpectedly, a stint behind jail bars. In the cramped cell he reflects on faith, language, and the absurdities of power, while the world outside swirls with intrigue and whispered rumors of witchcraft. The early chapters blend vivid travel portraiture with tense, personal reckonings that set the stage for a larger, peril‑filled quest.

An adventurous 19th-century English writer, traveler, and gifted linguist, he turned years of wandering into vivid books that still feel energetic and unusual today. He is best known for "The Bible in Spain" and for the semi-autobiographical works "Lavengro" and "The Romany Rye."
