In the years after the early‑nineteenth‑century upheavals that pulled Finland from Swedish rule into the Russian sphere, the remote villages of Satakunta feel the tremors of a changing world. Here, dense forests and sprawling fields frame a community that channels its restless energy into fierce yet oddly genteel contests—hand‑to‑hand bouts, foot races, and tests of strength that echo ancient customs without ever drawing a blade. The tight‑knit hamlets of Loukkula, Noronpää and Hotikkala live by these rites, their houses clustered together as if to shield one another from both wolves and wandering marauders.
Amid this charged atmosphere a towering figure looms: Laika Otto, the celebrated champion whose lithe build and striking presence make him the envy of every village. He is drawn into a tangled web of rivalry when the gentle‑spoken Iisu, a handsome youth with a reputation for hesitance, arrives seeking his own place among the strongmen. Their budding connection, set against the backdrop of village pride and the looming contests, promises both camaraderie and conflict as the community braces for the next round of challenges.

A pioneer of Finnish theater and one of its early screen storytellers, these works come from a writer who moved easily between the stage, the page, and the young film industry. His stories often drew on everyday Finnish life while bringing a strong feel for dialogue and performance.
