Description

The story opens in the humming heart of a 1920s Helsinki theatre, where the relentless toll of a stage‑clock sets a nervous rhythm for everyone backstage. In the cramped dressing room, a veteran stage‑hand and costume master pulls the protagonist, Daniel Hjort, into a hurried costume change, while the ever‑present, almost oppressive, sound of the bell demands obedience and sparks a palpable tension. Through brisk dialogue with a warm‑hearted wardrobe mistress and a wry, older colleague, the scene captures the mixture of ritual, superstition and camaraderie that defines the world behind the curtains.

From this charged moment, the narrative follows Hjort as he navigates rehearsals, enigmatic directives, and the subtle power games of the theatre’s inner circle. The novel paints a vivid portrait of artistic ambition colliding with personal doubt, using the theatre’s machinery as a metaphor for larger societal expectations. The atmosphere is simultaneously intimate and surreal, inviting listeners to feel the pulse of a living stage and the quiet anxieties that pulse through its most dedicated players.
