Description

The piece unfolds in a bucolic inn beside a sparkling lake, where the indolent patriarch Jaakoppi drifts between dream and idle chatter. His eager daughter Aino bursts in, demanding answers about a looming celebration, while the rest of the household – a pretentious noblewoman, a blustering carpenter, and a host of flamboyant relatives – hover in the background. Through rapid, tongue‑in‑cheek exchanges the work lampoons the empty pomp of local politics and the desperate quest for status.

The language is deliberately over‑the‑top, with stage directions urging performers to amplify every sigh, swagger and stumble. Jaakoppi’s self‑important ramblings clash with Aino’s bright‑spirited practicality, and each supporting figure brings a distinct brand of comic absurdity, from a pompous aristocrat to a nervous, dark‑clad carpenter. Listeners will feel the playful chaos of a family trying to dress up its humble tavern for a grand, imagined audience.
