Description

In this lively domestic comedy, the Frank household is gathered around a breakfast table while petty disputes over furniture and a proposed new doorway spiral into a broader debate about gender expectations. The witty banter between the restless Frank, his wife Elise, and their servants reveals a household both cramped and full of ambition, where the desire for a bit more comfort clashes with stubborn traditions. Through sharp, almost theatrical dialogue, the novel sketches the everyday frustrations that turn routine mornings into a stage for social commentary.

The arrival of a striking, dark‑skinned visitor adds an unexpected ripple to the household’s routine. His presence, described with vivid detail, prompts both curiosity and uneasy reflections on class, race, and the limits of hospitality in a tightly knit family. As the characters grapple with his enigmatic demeanor, the story teases deeper examinations of identity, belonging, and the subtle power struggles that shape family life.
