A modest farmhouse in the Finnish countryside becomes a quiet stage for a lively debate about the country’s emerging social currents. Simuna, a stoic patriarch, and his daughter Elina, a practical seamstress, exchange ideas about the local sobriety meetings and the pressing need for a new kind of community space. Their conversation draws in Martta, the housekeeper, whose gentle urging hints at a lingering loneliness that still haunts the older generation.
The arrival of younger voices—determined Lyyli, thoughtful Antti, and their peer Irja—adds both hope and tension to the evening. Their youthful energy clashes with the cautious optimism of the elders, while a mysterious stranger in dark coat watches from the shadows, suggesting that change may be closer than anyone expects. The play captures a moment of generational crossroads, where personal worries and broader ideals intersect in the warm glow of a ceiling lamp.

A pioneer of Finnish theater and one of its early screen storytellers, these works come from a writer who moved easily between the stage, the page, and the young film industry. His stories often drew on everyday Finnish life while bringing a strong feel for dialogue and performance.
