Set against the quiet of a Finnish workshop in the early 1900s, the play follows the everyday lives of a small community of laborers and their families. Perttu the blacksmith drifts wearily through his day, while his son Antti, a lively iron‑worker, brings youthful energy to the cramped rooms. Their sister Irja tends the kitchen, and the bright‑tempered Lyyli, together with the eager apprentice Heljo, represent the next generation poised for change.
When news circulates that an engineer plans to buy the nearby Suokorpi estate, the conversation turns to dwindling wages, the promise of a new house and the looming marriages of Antti and Lyyli. Through humor and heated debate, the characters expose the tension between traditional labor and emerging social ideas, hinting at the rising workers’ movement that will shape the coming years. The dialogue feels intimate yet resonant, offering listeners a vivid snapshot of a community on the cusp of transformation.

A pioneer of Finnish theater and one of its early screen storytellers, these works come from a writer who moved easily between the stage, the page, and the young film industry. His stories often drew on everyday Finnish life while bringing a strong feel for dialogue and performance.
