Description

A Norse seafarer, son of a Norwegian chieftain, finds himself in an unlikely alliance with the English ruler known as King Alfred. Through his eyes we glimpse the uneasy birth of England’s first royal fleet, a ragtag armada of ships and men drawn together to fend off the relentless Danish incursions that have turned the countryside into a maze of marshes and fortified earthworks. The narrative blends the stark realities of 9th‑century warfare with the lingering myths of the sagas, painting a vivid picture of a world where loyalty is tested on both river and battlefield.

The story follows the Viking commander as he navigates the shifting politics of a land still reeling from invasion, learning the strategies of a king who sees the enemy not as a single foe but as a network of rival chieftains. Set against the haunting fenlands of Athelney and the looming hills of Edington, the tale captures the tension, hope, and raw determination that mark the early days of a united England.
