The story opens on a quiet hill overlooking the River Parret, where a young, newly‑inherited thane of Somerset stands before the Folk Moot, eager to rule as his father once did. His confidence soon draws the attention of Matelgar, the richer and more cunning thane of Stert, whose flattering friendship masks a deeper ambition. As the new ruler voices concerns about the king’s policies, he unwittingly steps into a web of rivalry and deceit that will test his loyalty and judgment.
One night the king’s men storm his hall, accusing him of treason and dragging him away in chains. Forgotten in the darkness of his prison, he clings to the hope that his supposed ally might intervene. When he is finally led back into bright spring sunlight, the land is already stirring with rumors of great Viking raids, hinting that the battle for his honor has only just begun.
