About the author

Born on 14 November 1856, Charles Watts Whistler was an English writer, Anglican clergyman, and trained physician. He is best remembered for historical fiction set in the early medieval period, especially stories inspired by Anglo-Saxon England and the Viking world.

Whistler studied medicine and was known by the credentials MRCS and LSA, but he also served in the church and built a literary career alongside his other work. His fiction was shaped by close attention to early chronicles, Norse and Danish sagas, and archaeological discoveries, which gave his novels a strong sense of place and period.

He died on 10 June 1913. Today he remains of interest to readers who enjoy older historical adventures and stories rooted in the legends and recorded history of early Britain.
