Kalle Kettunen, a diligent schoolboy, lives with the widowed caretaker Mehtonen and his younger siblings, Pekka and Sirkka, in a modest boarding house. As spring ends, a letter announces that the family must soon begin the long trek back to their home in far‑northern Lapland.
Pekka, a headstrong twelve‑year‑old, bristles at the bishop’s request to sacrifice their prized calf “Tösseli,” while Kalle offers calm humor to ease the tension. Little Sirkka clutches the letter, seeking reassurance, adding a gentle counterbalance.
With exams finished, the trio gathers a handful of pencils, leather shoes, and cherished trinkets, joining the “Kettusen komppania”—a loose caravan of classmates—toward the north. The early miles bring playful disputes over meals, occasional mischief, and the awe of watching the familiar south give way to the stark, snow‑capped horizon. Listeners travel with them, feeling the mix of duty, friendship, and the excitement of a first great adventure.

A Finnish novelist and Lutheran priest, he became one of the notable storytellers of Finland’s early independence era. Much of his fiction drew its energy from Lapland, while his historical novels and later works inspired by travels in Hungary widened his range.
