Atop a snow‑capped fell stands a solitary torppa, its gray walls turning white in winter and fading into mist when sunlight hits the lone window. The villagers call it “Näköala‑Niiles” after its founder, who built it for the view. The Niiles family, with their high, sermon‑shaped foreheads and dreaming eyes, move through the village as quiet nobles, their speech marked by a lone “d” that only the parish clerk remembers. Though poor, they carry a dignity that seems carved into the rock itself.
Young Matias Niiles is the most imaginative of the line, often lingering after service with his eyes fixed on the altar’s painted scenes. He spends his days climbing the narrow path from the torppa to the lower homes, drawn to a weather‑worn building where the parish clerk whispers of Iida, the priest’s daughter, and a secret known only to the Niiles. As winter thaws, his curiosity pushes him toward a subtle adventure that will test his dreams against the stark realities of mountain life.

1883–1939
A Finnish priest-novelist who helped bring Lapland into modern Finnish literature, he wrote vivid stories shaped by northern landscapes, Sámi themes, and a restless, eventful life. Popular in the 1910s through 1930s, he was especially known for fiction that made the far north feel immediate and alive.
