In the bustling streets of post‑war Helsinki, a group of Laitakatu boys have claimed a quiet corner of the cathedral’s south wall as their own. Janne Flykt, known affectionately as “Kirkko‑Janne,” balances his Sunday pew‑sitting with his friends’ clandestine penny‑throwing game, where each toss is met with a mix of rivalry and laughter. The wall’s resilient surface becomes a makeshift arena, its steady bounce turning cheap coins into fleeting fortunes for the boys who gather there after school.
Together with Tervon Kalle and Lassilan Gideon, Janne navigates the unspoken rules of this humble sport, swapping victories and losses while maintaining a fragile camaraderie that mirrors the modest values of their neighbourhood. Their playful contests echo deeper questions of belonging and respect for the sacred space they’ve turned into a playground. As the summer light warms the stone, the trio’s spirited rituals hint at larger stories of friendship, temptation, and the search for identity in a city still finding its footing.

A Finnish priest-novelist who helped bring Lapland into modern Finnish literature, he wrote vivid stories shaped by northern landscapes, Sámi themes, and a restless, eventful life. Popular in the 1910s through 1930s, he was especially known for fiction that made the far north feel immediate and alive.
