Description

A disillusioned former French officer, now serving the Russian army, is forced to leave behind a lost love and a shattered reputation. After a failed revolt leaves his comrades dead, he secures a commission through dubious contacts and is sent to the remote frontiers of Central Asia. The narrative follows his weary journey across Europe, his boarding of a ship in Marseille, and his uneasy hope for redemption in a land far from home.

The vessel drops anchor at Pot, a bustling port on the black‑water Phasis, where stone houses cling to the water on massive timber platforms. The air hums with the scent of reeds, hot‑climate disease, and the clamor of traders from distant tribes. Here the lieutenant first catches sight of a captivating dancer from Shamakha, whose graceful movements hint at mysteries hidden beneath the exotic scenery. Their brief encounter sparks a curiosity that will draw him deeper into the region’s tangled politics and customs.
