A heavy fog blankets the riverbanks of Riga on a storm‑tossed July morning, silencing the city’s usual bustle. King Charles XII rides forward with a small party of fifty men, chasing the evasive Cardinal Primak and General Steinau through the murk. Tense words are exchanged between the impatient young horn and the seasoned sergeant Kaski, setting a contrast between youthful zeal and hardened experience.
The king’s bold gamble soon draws his riders into an ambush, leaving more than half of the force dead or captured. Amid the loss, veteran Kaski’s steady presence offers the surviving soldiers a glimpse of resolve. Listeners will feel the chill of the fog, the clatter of hooves, and the uneasy tension that marks Sweden’s desperate campaign of 1700.
