Description

In the chill of an October morning in 1632, a weary miller named Heinrich Mayer watches the world from his wind‑blown tower on the hills above Lützen. The lingering echo of the recent battles still haunts the countryside, and the mill’s creaking shutters become a stage for a heated exchange with the massive, gruff Mathias Gründler, a man whose presence seems to shake the very stone beneath them.

Their quarrel spirals from grievances about the “papists” and the looming shadow of the Swedish king to a tangled promise of marriage between their children. Heinrich, haunted by loss and the fear of starvation, grapples with the notion that his daughter Annchen might be “mad with love,” while Mathias insists that the arrangement is already doomed. The dialogue crackles with raw emotion, hinting at deeper social and personal tensions that will shape the lives of those bound to the mill and the war‑torn land.

The story captures a moment of uncertainty, where personal hopes clash with the larger turmoil of a nation still reeling from conflict, inviting listeners to step into a world of stubborn pride, fragile dreams, and the ever‑present specter of war.
