John Whopper is a Boston newsboy whose mornings begin with a paper bundle and a path through familiar streets. One restless Tuesday, he decides to cut across an overgrown field, hoping to shave precious minutes from his route. The shortcut turns catastrophic when the ground gives way, thrusting him into a dark, bottomless cavity.
As he tumbles, John’s thoughts race from regrets to strange calculations, and even a coat sleeve becomes his makeshift breathing tube. After what feels like ages, the fall slows, a faint light appears, and he realizes he is emerging on the opposite side of the world. He lands with a practiced somerset flip, bewildered but exhilarated, ready to face an unfamiliar landscape that promises a new kind of adventure.
