Jim

A former officer of the Canadian Mounted Police sets out for a solitary life on a remote north‑Saskatchewan homestead, bringing only his loyal regimental dog, Jim, for company. The rugged wilderness quickly becomes a classroom where the narrator learns to fell trees, haul lumber, and fish through icy winters, while Jim tries to fill the empty echo of bugle calls with his own mournful howls.

As the seasons change, the pair’s routine expands to include trapping, cropping fields, and building a new log stable that promises a more comfortable future. Yet the demanding work of hoisting massive timbers alone brings sudden danger; a snapped rope sends a heavy log crashing down, pinning the narrator’s leg and leaving him helpless beneath the weight.
