A vivid memoir unfolds from the perspective of a university professor who served in Croatia between 1853 and 1867. He watches the empire’s attempt to suppress the Croatian language and culture, describing the dreaded German‑origin officials he nicknames “Bahovi huzarji.” At the same time, he highlights the steadfast “Iliri” – clergy, teachers and patriots who strive to protect national schools and customs.
The narrator records conversations, classroom scenes and bureaucratic encounters with a blend of personal detail and the testimonies of his Croatian and Slovene friends. While many names are altered for discretion, the portraits of professors, school inspectors and local officials feel authentic, offering a colourful glimpse of 19th‑century educational life and the everyday resistance against imposed Germanisation. The book reads like a thoughtful journal, inviting listeners to hear the sounds of a contested past and the quiet courage of those who defended their heritage.
