Description

In the quiet town of Hemsborough, the Rayburn household hangs between the lingering comfort of a respectable brewery manager’s life and the emptiness left by the early death of his wife. The aging Mr. Rayburn runs his affairs with a practical steadiness, while his only son, Fred, a seventeen‑year‑old clerk, drifts through his days with restless energy—sneaking out for sports, wandering the stone stairs, and demanding meals at odd hours. Their domestic sphere is further unsettled by Judith, the housemaid, whose habits clash with the family’s expectations, creating a subtle but constant tension.

Fred is a dreamer at heart, scribbling verses, dabbling with the flute, and yearning for a life richer in art and adventure than the routine of the counting‑house can offer. As he balances duty to his father with a growing dissatisfaction, the story gently explores his longing for purpose and the fragile hope that something beyond the brewery walls might finally bring the home the family seems to crave.
