Description

The story opens on the looming grandeur of Egerton Highfield, a true English country estate wrapped in ivy and shadowed by ancient trees. Sir Aymer Egerton patrols its terrace with a measured, almost ritualistic stride, his silver‑touched hair and sharp blue eyes hinting at a lingering youth beneath the surface. Yet beneath this stately façade lies a household ruled by his imperious temperament, setting the stage for the tensions that simmer within the family.

Within those walls, Sir Aymer’s children—two sons and a bright, gentle daughter named Clarice—navigate a world of expectation and fragile affection. A sudden, harrowing accident claims Clarice’s life, leaving the family shattered and the young Guy haunted by the loss. As grief and guilt intertwine, the narrative explores how a genteel household grapples with sorrow, duty, and the uneasy search for resilience in the aftermath of tragedy.
