Description

Born on the quiet banks of the Merrimack in a modest Massachusetts village, Hawser Martingale grows up amid stories of ancestors who crossed the Atlantic centuries before. From the moment he can read, he devours tales of Robinson Crusoe and other wandering heroes, and an unshakable yearning for the open ocean takes root in his imagination. The narrative opens with his youthful conviction that a life at sea will satisfy a longing for danger, discovery, and a world beyond the familiar New England hills.

Soon after school, Hawser secures a place on a merchant vessel, leaving behind his hometown for bustling ports and unpredictable weather. The early voyages are filled with vivid sketches of cramped forecastles, salty camaraderie, and the awe of foreign coastlines that whet his appetite for more. As storms batter the ship and merchant dealings test his resolve, he begins to understand that the sailor’s life is as harsh as it is romantic, setting the stage for the many adventures that will follow.
