INDICE
Set against the bustling trade routes of the 13th‑century Mediterranean, the narrative opens with the restless ambition of Venetian and Genoese merchants eager to tap the riches of Central Asia and China. It follows the Polo family, whose roots stretch from Dalmatia to the canals of Venice, and introduces Niccolò and Matteo, two seasoned traders who set out with jewels and curiosity toward the great courts of the East. Their venture quickly becomes more than commerce, as they navigate the volatile politics of the Mongol realms.
After a perilous trek across the steppes, the brothers reach the summer capital of Kublai Khan, the Mongol ruler of the Yuan dynasty, who receives them with lavish hospitality and keen interest in European affairs. Impressed by their knowledge, the Khan appoints them as his ambassadors to the Pope, tasking them with carrying messages and a sacred oil lamp back to the Latin West. Joined by their nephew Marco, the party sets out on a legendary overland journey that will later be recorded as one of the most detailed first‑hand accounts of medieval Asia.
