After a perilous trek across the steppes, the brothers reach the summer capital of Kublai Khan, the Mongol ruler of the Yuan dynasty, who receives them with lavish hospitality and keen interest in European affairs. Impressed by their knowledge, the Khan appoints them as his ambassadors to the Pope, tasking them with carrying messages and a sacred oil lamp back to the Latin West. Joined by their nephew Marco, the party sets out on a legendary overland journey that will later be recorded as one of the most detailed first‑hand accounts of medieval Asia.
