Description

In the bustling little town of Creux‑de‑Pile, the notary’s office becomes a stage for a lively marriage negotiation. Master Bouchardy, a jovial and meticulous clerk, is determined to secure a prosperous match for the radiant Hyacinthe, the daughter of the poetic Rosine Forestier and a longtime deputy. Across the table sits his counterpart, Saumonet, who brings the eager young Michel, a doctor’s son with a handsome inheritance, into the delicate bargaining.

The dialogue crackles with witty repartee as the two men tally dowries, family debts, and the stubborn pride of both households. Their clerk, a modest “Trapoiseau,” is tasked with recording every concession and drafting a contract that will satisfy love and ledger alike. As the clock ticks toward dinner, the audience senses that the agreement will demand more than plain arithmetic, hinting at a clash of hearts, honor, and the stubborn economics of 19th‑century provincial France.
