After eleven years apart, the Canneheuvel family gathers in a newly bought villa in the Van Stolkpark, which they christen ‘Huize Canneheuvel.’ The grandparents, eager to revive the lively homestead of their youth, welcome their grandson Bas, returning from Soerabaïa after a difficult school stint abroad. The house offers a quiet refuge compared to the bustling city life of The Hague where the older children have settled, and the parents strive to keep the family close while balancing work.
Bas, once a frail child, has grown into a sturdy, red‑cheeked youth who quickly becomes the heart of the household with his gentle way with animals. He feeds the garden birds, cares for the neighbor’s dogs, and speaks to every creature with a soft, patient tone that seems to calm even the shyest feathered visitor. His quiet confidence and readiness to help suggest a life where simple kindness bridges the gaps between generations.
