Description

At the edge of a quiet village, where the road begins its slow climb toward the mountains, stands a curious estate known simply as “the manor.” Its stone walls, weather‑worn coat of arms, and iron‑spiked fence set it apart from the modest cottages that surround it. Inside, vaulted rooms lead to a courtyard with a covered well, a pair of elk‑shaped doorheads, and a striking peacock perched atop an old carriage. The scene feels like a page from an old folk tale, with sunlight dancing through the trees and swallows flitting between the eaves.

Beyond the manor’s gates, the village’s most talked‑about figure is the proprietor of the Red Deer tavern, a man reputed to know every secret of the area and much of the wider world. He hints at a long‑forgotten mission that once called for a decisive act in 1848, a moment that could reshape lives. As the narrator walks the winding lanes, the mysteries of the manor and the innkeeper’s whispered plans promise a tale that intertwines history, superstition, and the quiet lives of the villagers.
