Description

In this lively continuation of the classic pilgrimage, the monk Tang and his companions press onward toward the Western Paradise, only to be halted by an unexpected hunger. Their search for a simple offering leads them to a remote village where the residents react with suspicion, spitting and turning away at the sight of the wandering monk. Undeterred, the travelers try various polite pleas, only to discover that local customs treat itinerant monks with deep mistrust, making the act of almsgiving a fraught negotiation.

The story balances humor and philosophical reflection as the monk employs clever tricks to secure a bowl of rice, while his senior disciple debates the morality of taking what might be considered “stealing” from a reluctant host. Their dilemma highlights the tension between strict monastic precepts and the practical demands of a long journey. As they grapple with the villagers’ strange customs, the narrative invites listeners to ponder the true meaning of generosity and the challenges of staying true to one’s vows on the road ahead.

Xuahua Biao

Best known as the name attached to Hou Xiyouji (The Later Journey to the West), a sequel-style Chinese fantasy novel that continues the world of Journey to the West. Very little seems to be firmly documented about the person behind the name, which gives the work an extra layer of literary mystery.
