Description

In the humid foothills of the Himalayas, a weary party is drawn to a sprawling kraal that serves as a hub for hunters, drivers, and a rolling menagerie of buffalo and exotic beasts. The narrator, still shaken by the recent venom‑stung death of a Hindu companion, follows the pragmatic Matthias van Guitt into a wooden hut that doubles as kitchen and sleeping quarters. The setting crackles with the clang of steel, low growls of caged animals, and the threat of malaria, giving the place a tense, almost electric atmosphere.

As night falls, the small group is briefed by the enigmatic Captain Hod, who promises only a few nights of covert observation before they retreat to the lofty “Steam House” that crowns the ridge above the swampy plain. Within those stays, listeners will encounter a crew of Chikaris hunters, the rumble of wagons on rails, and the uneasy balance between colonial ambition and the unforgiving jungle. The first act sets the stage for a story where survival, rivalry, and hidden motives begin to surface.
