Description

Set against the mist‑filled fields surrounding the austere Moncrief House, the novel opens with a group of privileged boys confronting an unfamiliar newcomer on the school’s rundown playing field. The confrontation reveals the rigid hierarchy and the strict expectations that govern life at this exclusive boarding institute, where every action is watched and judged.

Within the dimly lit reception room, Dr. Moncrief and a poised but inscrutable lady discuss the future of a seventeen‑year‑old student whose ambitions seem to drift far from the academically driven path the school demands. Their conversation hints at a clash between personal desire and institutional pressure, inviting listeners to contemplate how a young mind navigates duty, aspiration, and the often‑overwhelming influence of those who claim to know what’s best.

Bernard Shaw

1856–1950

A razor-sharp Irish playwright and critic, he turned comedy into a tool for questioning politics, class, religion, and social habits. Best known for plays like Pygmalion and Saint Joan, he wrote with wit that still feels fresh.
