Description

In the spring of 1644, the quiet fields of Hayslope hide the nervous hum of a country torn by civil war. At the heart of the village stands Hayslope Grange, a rambling manor surrounded by a dry moat, home to the Drury family who tend both farm and household amidst uneasy loyalties. As armies clash in distant towns, the ordinary lives of mothers, sisters, and laborers crack under the weight of uncertainty.

One bright afternoon, the Drury children hear the clatter of hooves as their brother Harry rides back from the front, his cheerful smile quickly dimmed by a secret sorrow. Warm welcomes from most of the family mask a tense silence between him and the shy Maud, whose muted greeting hints at deeper divides. Listeners are drawn into the tangled web of duty, affection, and the looming choices each character must face as the war edges ever closer to their doorstep.
