CHAPTER IX. CONCLUSION.
From the moment he arrives at the boarding school, Charley feels the world split between the orderly corridors of his new classroom and the endless horizon that haunts his dreams. He and his close friend Tom turn their shared room into a miniature ship's cabin, stuffing it with compasses, charts and stolen bits of rope, while a daily log becomes both a record and a rebellion against the expectations of their modest mother. The two boys promise each other that one day they will command real vessels, and they already plot small adventures within the school’s strict routine.
Life at the academy proves less tranquil than the boys imagined. The stern governor delivers lectures on duty that clash with Charley's yearning for freedom, and even the housemaids seem to guard secrets of their own. Amid sketches of skating parties, a mysterious accident, and whispers of a possible theft, Charley learns that camaraderie and curiosity can turn ordinary schooldays into the first leg of a larger voyage.
