Description

In the summer of 186‑? a handful of boys in a quiet Ohio hamlet stare out from a fence‑top, rifles and makeshift tools in hand, while the war rages beyond their fields. Their world is a patchwork of worn out boots, a crutch‑bound runner, and the restless chatter of boys who long to prove themselves—some hoping to drum, others dreaming of a uniform. A letter from a brother in the ranks, smuggled into a pocket, brings news of battles and the approaching Fourth of July, sparking both dread and excitement.

Spurred by the idea of a private celebration, the trio concocts a daring plan: locate the town’s old iron cannon, raid a leaking powder car left on a river siding, and rig a makeshift fireworks display. Their schemes are as clumsy as they are bold, and the boys must grapple with the limits of their age, the weight of family expectations, and the looming shadow of war. The story captures the fevered imagination of youth on the brink of adulthood, set against a vivid slice of Civil‑War America.
