After a long, dust‑filled ride, young Count Axel Dehn arrives at the road that leads to the isolated Danish stronghold of Rankholm. The postilion’s brusque treatment of his luggage hints at the stoic, almost threatening world beyond the towering pines. Axel has heard dark tales of hidden stairways and a family famed for intrigue.
Now, at the edge of a quiet valley, the stone walls of Rankholm rise like a sleeping beast, its windows overlooking the tiny village of Kneedeholm. The aging Count Lavard oversees a lineage that covets wealth, power, and suitable matches for his two daughters, especially the elder Imgjor who already lives in the manor. Axel’s visit is officially a bridal inspection, but the oppressive atmosphere and the servants’ wary looks suggest more than etiquette will be tested.
As the carriage rolls down the tree‑lined avenue, Axel feels a growing unease, wondering whether the encounter will be a simple formality or the opening of a deeper, perhaps dangerous, chapter. He tightens his grip on the reins, half‑expecting the castle to reveal its secrets.
